Ethiopian soldiers in Somalia
At least 51 Ethiopian soldiers have been killed and injured in heavy fighting with insurgents in the central Somali region of Hiiran.

Ethiopian troops entered the town of BaladWeyn on Friday night, targeting civilians when they were attacked by insurgents, a witness told Press TV correspondent.

According to our correspondent's report, at least 27 civilians were killed in Ethiopian soldiers' heavy artillery attack, while insurgents captured many troops who were fleeing from the area.

The fighting still continues in the outskirts of the town after the withdrawal of Ethiopian soldiers, our correspondent added.

Ahmed has been accused of massacring Somali civilians.
The US-backed Ethiopian soldeirs were deployed to the country in 2006 to back the transitional government of President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed.

Ahmed was recently accused by the elders of Hawiye clan in capital Mogadishu of massacring thousands of civilians and forcing many people to leave their homes.

Ethiopia's government has ordered General Gabre Heard, the commander of the country's forces in Somalia, to return to the country because of their suspected involvement in financial scandals including the blackmailing of the Somali president, prime minister and various businessmen.

Gabre has been accused by the former deputy prime minister of Somalia, Hussein Mohamed Farah Aideed, of allowing the killing and displacing of thousands of Somali civilians.
