IF you work hard, save and save some more. Don't think you are an American and start spending like them. MOST Americans have a lot of debt which means no matter how they live they are still worth less than they owe (NEGATIVE NET WORTH)......
So we should discard College education. Brilliant.
No one is telling you to discard college... if you work hard, you will not be at disadvantage to a college graduate, in fact you might be at an advantage since you were working hard when your fellow graduate was partying it up for 4 years (and yes, Somalis are no different than your average college goer..) in any case... A college degree does not = success of any kind.

I been seeing it already, people who I had known since childhood now sleeping under trees and taking refuge in churches, why because the lifestyle they chose, mainly alcohol and drugs, it's funny because I watch the transition right infront of my eyes, started off ditching school, then to small time drugs and alcohol than to full time drugs and alcohol etc to the point they basically lose their minds. The sad part is, I see so many kids headed towards this road right this moment.

Some will go on to buy houses in Palm Beach, Florida....and some guys and their baby mommas will be collecting welfare in inner city housing projects getting into the same cycle of dependency Blacks and other inner city communities fall into.

I am amazed at the increasing number of homeless Somalis I see and all these kids not knowing where their actions will take them. At the least their economic social development will be stunted when compared to their peers and at the max some will go under the death penalty.

It is an interesting social evolution occurring right in front of our eyes. Has anyone else noticed?
Come to Minnesota and you will be blown away.

Successful Somalis who have established lives here have had their lives ruined by alcoholism and irresponsibility and now find themselves living from one shelter to another. Very sad indeed

First off, it needs no saying that the number one reason why people become homeless in this nation is due to Substance abuse. Anyone who's addicted will go to great lengths to get their fix. These people continually burn all kinds of bridges along the way. Some Relatives remain steadfast, but after a while slowly drift away. And friends? Oh u better believe they disappear faster than a bucket of Chicken at Oprah's house. NO one wants shame to be brought upon their names nor be seen with those considered F'up beyond repair. That is why people end up on the street. Somalis or otherwise.

Second of all: Broken Records! Young somalis just love diving into the AA ala' B.E.T lifestyle by getting caught up in some bullshit and then ruining their chances of ever getting get any decent jobs, or Financial aid (EVEN IF THEY WERE to attempt to GO TO COLLEGE) to go to college with, if it so happens that they were given drug felony charges. Not finding a job puts one on a dumb cycle that leads to a life of either more crime, or substance abuse. Again = Homelessness.

Anyway, O.P of the thread (voltage): U seemta have a grim outlook on things. Its either/or with you. So allow me to play the devils advocate, for a bit, and go out on a limb here and say that I agree with AbdulJ to a certain degree. Everyone thus far seems to be equating education as the only path to success. Its the easier for sure, but by no means the only one! Besides not EVERYONE is cut to be a college material. Half of this nation hasnt had above highschool diplomas, if that even. You don't see them sleeping on the streets. These f'ers drink and smoke on the regular. Still the majority stays off the streets, somehow! Besides, take a Look @ the first Generation. Some made it with language difficulties and no education, opening tons of businesses of their own in a country that they were unfamiliar with. Imagine what those who didnt Fock up their records, didnt coke their brains out, and know the language, are street savvy?. I believe in our folks enough to know that they'll always have quick scheme up their sleeves, and that it'll help em bounce back.

Besides, if it doesn't work out, someone somehow down the line could feel sorry for them, chip in a few bucks, send em' back to Africa. They'd find a girl to marry quick....and hit a reset button on life. OVERSIMPLISTIC? Yes. but It could very well happen. lol.

how is it not a safety net?! you really think an employer will take on someone who hasn't been to school and doesn't have a degree? your safety net for the future is your degree, without it you won't have a decent job, a good salary etc... in other words you won't be financially stable.

Guys, ppl tend to keep their culture beyond 3rd and 4th generation. There will be some changes but still the socialism/islam within our blood will never be erased altogether. I've seen this Italian American dude who told me that he lives with his grandmother, parents, his brother 4 member family and their 2 kids in a very big house. He is the 3rd generation American but his family kept their large family culture. It is not only him, every ethnic group retains its culture and Somalis are no different.

I can bet that no matter how many dope heads we produce, our homeless rate will always be much fewer than white/black/indian americans. Maybe we'll be little bit more than the Asians.

About old Somali friends: I know two guys who were deported back to Somalia because of some misdemeanor offenses. One of them actually lived as a homeless b4 he was removed from the country. These kids' families and relatives tried very hard to rehabilitate them to no avail.

abduljrus, a degree is not a safety net but will give u a better chance. If you have $$$$ then you can have your own business and hire ppl with degrees. Look @ this story:
http://www.newsnet14.com/2008/01/eight- ... amp-fraud/ these halal meats had revenues in millions. The story is about fraud but what surprised me is that how these little stores make that much $$$. I don't think running a halal meat needs specialty diploma.

I have seen on CNN a guy who used to make 150K per year and now works @ Star Bucks
