Leila,
Subxaanallaah, sister it is dangerous for a Muslim to say the xadiiths of prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) should be revised. Every thing that prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated is good at any generation and any time. It is humans who are taking it too extreme and may not fully undertsand the purpose and the meaning. In my understanding, it is putting the responsibility on the man to know how his wife and doughters are doing, what does she need, and where she needs to go. It is to ensure that he, the man, should be aware of the well-being of his wife/daughters and their whereabouts. Travelling is still a safety issue. Let me give you an example, dut to the upsurge of violence in Southern Somalia particularly Mogadishu, there are many Somalis who take the risk road from Somalia thru Kenya thru Southern Sudan thru North Sudan thru Libya and take the risk of taking small boats to Malta and then thru Europe. A large number of these migrants are women. It would be heart breaking to hear the horrors they are going thru during these riky migrations. Many loose their lives and many of them are being abused. I have to say it in Soomaali "waxaa jirta in ka badan 400 gabdhood oo Soomaali ah oo ay khasab ku qabsadeen maleeshiyada Koonfurta Sudan ee Christianka iyo Animistka ah waxaana loo haystaa waa addoonsi ay xoog ku haystaan maleeshiyadaas. It is a well-known tragedy that occurred to our migrant women. If we really understood the whole meaning of Muxrim, these would never have happened to our women. The father, the brother, and the husbands of these Somali women should never have allowed these defenseless women to take this risky journey.
