Effects of Deforestation in the Sool and South Sanaag region

Post by udun »

Deforestation in the Sool and South Sanaag regions of Somalia.

These videos are presented to show the affects of deforestation, tree cutting, and the burning of the forest for charcoal purposes. Majority of the land in the videos were forest 15 - 20 years ago. Majority of the local community are aware and actually experienced the effects of these devastating activities on the environment which they and their animals live on. They are actually taking matters into their own hands and are facing the onslaught that were presented to them by the people who are cutting the trees and the people who are financing these operations.

The diaspora Somalis are required to know what is happening backhome and they need to support the folks backhome who are trying to do something about it and also take part the efforts to restore Somalia's forest. There is a shortage of biologists, agronomists, chemists, and environmental scientists in Somalia to restore the forest. The entire Galool (Acacia Bussei) trees are under attack and it needs to be stopped. It was reported that those that cut the trees for Charcoal purposes are targetting these trees.

For those of you who are concerned about it, please keep the word spreading. Somalia's forest needs you. Keep in mind that if the forest disappears, so is Somalia's livestock, and if the livestock disappears, so is Somalia's population. May Allah forbid it will never happen.

Cariska Awrboogeyseed.

Juhurka Awrboogayseed and the Dhudhub creek (Toga Dhudhub).

This place is called Gubato and it used to be full of forest and animals that live in the forest. There are some of the forest left but at least 50% were cut.

This is Oodla to those who know and it did not used to be like this. The effects of tree cutting and successive draughts have most devastated the forest.
