I am from Hounslow and I have NEVER watch a single episode of this sordid programme, I gather ITV depends on it, without X Factor the whole station is going to the dog apparently, staggering situation really. ...

Not true, in the old day yes, maybe 30 yrs ago. We have 5 'free to air channels', standard 'free' channels (we pay TV Licence to finance BBC) but there are zillions on channels on pay TV like on Sky or Virgin...These are mostly crap stuff.

And yes, we did use to have only 4 terrestrial channels (before channel 5 came along). Must be why we're not all overwight couch potatoes like our american counterparts.

We have: BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel Five

Channel 4 is owned by BBC and Channel 5 is American so technically we have 1 real channel; ITV.
