Japanese ship hit with rocket launcher outside Somalia coast

Post by Coeus »

A vessel operated by a Japanese shipping company was attacked off Somalia with a gun or rocket launcher and some crew were slightly injured by broken glass, a Japanese government official said Tuesday.

The Panamanian-flagged "Oriental Rose" with 21 crew aboard -- 19 Filipinos and two South Koreans -- was attacked late Monday, according to the transport ministry official and Daitoh Trading, which runs the vessel.

"The Oriental Rose was attacked by a suspicious boat with a gun or something like a rocket launcher, which broke some windows," the official said.

"Some of the crew were slightly injured by shattered glass."

The boat disappeared after a Chinese military ship, which was escorting the Japanese and other vessels, approached the area, the official said.

The 8,259-tonne vessel continued sailing toward India from the Netherlands as scheduled without making any emergency port call, he added.

The Japanese have stolen billions tons of Somalia's marine resources. This has been known for years, so, it's fair that Somali pirates target them.

Fortunately, there is no case of death incidence. It seems that until now the criminals behind this incident are unidentified. The shipping company needs to take their action to strengthen their security or protection.
