ISTUNKA is somali word which came from beating each other traditional festival which is celebrated annually by the people inhabited in afgoi Town, The Digil Mirifle Geledi, Hawiye tribe of Wacdaan, and other people from the corners of the capital, mogadishu "

when I was working at Afgoi eye clinic in 1988-89 I saw it with my own eyes.....it be can brutal....the hospital staff have to be ready for casualties...which can be life threatening..... :roll:

Pre-Islamic paganism, that and the "dabshid". Old persian influence. Zoroastrians do the exact same thing

It used to be a major event back in the day. Families would drive from all over the country to go to Af-gooye and watch it.

It was pre-Islamic, but it was all innocent fun. One of the many things we lost with the war.

May be u are too young to remember....Siad Barre thought of stopping the practice...but there were no rain for two years... :lol:
