Visiting senior U.S. military officers held talks with their Ugandan counterparts regarding the African Union (AU) peacekeeping mission in Somalia, a statement issued late on Monday said.
The statement from the office of the Uganda People's Defense Force spokesman said Gen. William Ward, commander of AFRICOM who headed the U.S. delegation hailed Uganda and Burundi for deploying over 8,000 peacekeepers in volatile Somalia.
"The AFRICOM commander hailed the Ugandan and Burundian militaries for their heroic contribution to peace and security in Somalia and the entire continent," the statement said.
AFRICOM is an acronym of the U.S. Africa Command, a Combatant Command of the U.S. Department of Defense that is responsible for U.S. military operations and military relations with Africa.
The statement did not give details of the discussion about the peacekeeping mission but the United States has been providing logistical support to the AU peacekeepers in Somalia.
Uganda has pledged to deploy over 20,000 troops in Somalia provided it is given logistical support and equipment for the mission.
Gen. Aronda Nyakairima who headed the Uganda delegation also discussed issues of bilateral and regional interest with his U.S. counterparts.

TFG is not designed to work Cirwaaq. The continuation of the war is subcontracted to Uganda, Burundi, and others who will follow up. The TFG don't have a voice here.Cirwaaq wrote:20,000 troop

What can they do if the initial intention is that TFG not to be functional? They have their share of the blame but the blame lies far beyondCirwaaq wrote:udun wrote:TFG is not designed to work Cirwaaq.
