The Secretary General of the United Nations' special envoy to Somalia, ambassador Dr. Augustine Mahiga, has begun reconciliation efforts between the Somali President, Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and the speaker of the Somali parliament, Sharif Hassan sheikh Adan in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.

Ambassador Mahiga held a closed door meeting with the speaker of the Somali parliament, Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan, in Nairobi last night,but the details of the outcome of their meeting is not known.

The constitutional dispute between Sheikh Sharif and Sharif Hassan was caused by the extension of the tenure of the Somali Parliament to three more years, a move which attracted criticism from the international community.

Unconfirmed reports indicate ambassador Mahiga demanded that Sharif Hassan work towards revoking the decision in which the Somali parliament extended its tenure by three more years. Sharif Hassan's position on Ambassador Mahiga's proposal is not known.



The Somali president rejected the extension of the tenure of the Somali parliament by three more years, arguing that due process was not followed. However, the speaker of the Somali parliament said that the president had no right to interfere in the work of the parliament.

Meanwhile, ambassador Mahiga and the speaker of the Somali parliament, Sahrif Hassan discussed the upcomiong conference on the future of Somalia which will be held on the 21 of March 2011 in Nairobi. This conference will be participated by representatives of the Somali government, Ahlusuna, Golmudug and the autonomous Somali region of Puntland.
