let us exchange refugee stories!

Post by JolieFille »

Because of the civil war, we all became refugees in exile, but whats your story? ! avoid talking about Qabil and politics in this topix.

It was a beautiful spring day in January 1991 when the war came to Mogadishu, there was fierce fighting in the city between the government and rebels, mass murder and looting became a part of life in Mogadishu, it was at this time that my family fled together with the military, all the way to Kismayio, from here we sailed with a dangerous boat all the way to Kenya, lived 4 months in the refugee camp Utanga, in the beginning, we were 500 people in the camp, eventually we had increased to 100000 refugees from Mogadishu, it was actually nice to be in Utanga, I was enrolled in a school and sports club, at evening we were all sitting together and talking about life in Mogadishu... after 4 months, my family were taken to Denmark by the UN and I haved since lived in exile. I hope we all once again will live in our beautiful homeland amen!

The war did not come to Xamar on January '91, it started on December 26th, 1990.

There was already a long thread on this :arrow: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=256879

But anyway here's mine:

The day SNM came into the Hargeisa, the whole city was under curfew from dhuhur time till SNM strode into the city at night. Initially we thought that this clash would just cool over within a few days so we walked to family in miyiga (balayga cas). After a couple of days there we realised that this war could take months if not a couple of years so we made the decision to cross the border to dulcad. When we reached abaarso we spent the night there and from what I was told that was one of the worst nights, the whole area was empty except for dozens and dozens of baboons who made us tense the whole night. Funnily enough my family said they were more scared of being caught by faqash soldiers than being attacked by 20 or so baboons. :lol:
Anyway long story short, we got to the border in which case we stayed at our 5star accomodation at dulcad (just kidding ;) ) for a month or two we then travelled to dire dawa where we caught the train to djibouti. We stayed for about a year in djibouti with family and then travelled to addis to get our visa then flew out to london.
