Why don't Ogadenis settle near the Shabelle river?
How come there are almost no settlements along the Shabelle river inside Ethiopia? I noticed this while I was following the Shabelle river to its source in Google Earth, while on the Somalia side of the Shabelle river you will see a settlement every few miles.

It requires intelligence to realize the usefulness of settling next to a river. And....

...but does anyone have a serious explanation?
If you follow the Shabelle River inside Ethiopia you find no major towns, but when it starts entering Somalia ..just a few miles in the country and you already have Beledweyne and it goes on.

The only people who settle in the Shabelle in Ogadenia are the Jareerweyn in Godey region. Why? I don't know.
Union, I wouldn't throw stones from a glass house, unlike Ogaden who haven't and still don't have settlements near the rivers, there's many Marexaan towns situated directly on the Jubba river but most of the year they look like deserts. There's virtually no signs of irrigation in Gedo on any level. Marexaan cities on the Jubba river look drier than most of Waqoyi. Look it up on Google earth, the town of Luuq is literally ringed by the river and looks drier than Dhuusomareeb - the only thing that grows there is the wild bush.

Hundreds of miles of prime agricultural land is not utilized inside the Ogaden. It's very strange.
If they used all that land near the Shabelle for farming, there would never be a famine in the Horn.

There is not one single Somali clan that settles along the river than Ogaden. For your info, Absame/Ogaden setttle along Jubba and Shabeele rivers.
In Somalia, just check the maps and see what clan live the closest to the river banks..
In Ogadenia, major Ogaden cities lie on Shabeele river such as Godey, Mustaxiil, Qalaafe, the entire Faafan region, and many others I can't recall their names.

^Based on the satellite images there are almost no settlements along the Shebelle inside Ethiopia, it looks totally uninhabited for the most part.

The quetion is strange but if you must know it runs through godey and khalafo the heart of the Ogaden.

lol, the river stretches 400 miles inside the Ogaden.. a handful of towns is really nothing. I was expecting to see a town every few miles or so.Shift wrote:The quetion is strange but if you must know it runs through godey and khalafo the heart of the Ogaden.

Thats why your quetion would have made more sense if you aplied it to the split culture of somalis, beerato iyo geeljire.dadka qaar waa guuraa/nomad geel dhaqato ah qaarna waa kuwa beeraha fasha.
