its all of your own making.....by refusing to accept you are Somali `s, you have cut your noses to spite your face.
you`ve had relative peace for the last 16 years without the peace dividend.

unfortunately it seems the current regime in hargeisa is intent on pursuing the same discredited isolationists policies.
I would expect the calls for a rethink of sl policy will grow increasingly louder, since the suldaan of sl has already broken that taboo.

abdi.ismail wrote:The spending money is 147 mil then their actual gdp must be somthing like 200 mil. 200 mill for an entire nation? That is beyond ridiculous.
GDP at $200 million ???? are you crazy? where did you get this figure?
There are no definate figures but only estimates and the estimates for Somalia as a whole is equal to ethiopia more or less at $600 Per capita, with somalilands population at 3-5 to 4 million thats around $2.4 billion.PPP

The GDP as a whole is much larger than the estimate i would place it at approximatley $1100 per capita
why because our economy is highly linked to international trade this should make up a similiar percenatge of the total economy
countries exposed to trade like us have over 80% of their GDP made up of trade.

Now since the livestock boom of the past 2 years we are back to the $250 million plus revenue from livestock
combine this with the $750 million from remittances and you have $1000. Imports were $500 million in 2006 so i would expect it to rise to $800 to $900. Making this ~ $2.3 billion at current dollar rates and nearly double that at PPP
.

I am not taking these figures from my ass, i am using what little info we have an extropolating
i will not be that far off when you take into account the circumstances so its probably $500 million plus or minus.

abdi.ismail wrote:And I only used UP as an example, I don't care about GDP per capita. I am willing to increase somalis population just to increase revenue. I care about overall productivity. And it seems the gdp of that state is close to Angola's, which is an african country on the rise. Isn't that sad?
you dont care aboyut GDP per capita?
so you only care about overall GDP?
again i as you are you nuts? how can you make a comparison like that?

So in your way of thinking Ethiopia is a richer country than Mauritius
when Ethiopias GDP is $30 billion and Mauritius is only $10 billion
nominal GDP for Mauritius is $8000 while for Ethiopia $350
one country is 82 million + while the other is only 1.3 million

which is the Richer country i wonder?

Abdi.ismael you need to compare somaliland to other countries the comparison is not that bad, and we are at this stage despite
all of our challenges that other countries do not face.
This is why when you look at Uttar Pradesh we need to as what the fuck is wrong with India when they have all this high technology a space program, nuclear weapons, is a fully industrilized country, why the hell is its largest state almost as poor as an unrecognized state in east africa that has recovered from war with little aid?

Oh yes if we never declared independence, we would suddenly be rich and peaceful under the benevolent rule of somalia?

Oh wait a second isnt somalia a failed state , with no government to speak of, with no institutions?
tell me how the hell would somalia benefit Somaliland?

firstly, and most importantly of all "somaliland" would have been able to access all of the multilateral institutions like world bank/IMF.
Secondly, the major oil companies (not just the minor speculators),could invest billions knowing their investments were legally protected.

somaliland is like a person owning a house but not being able to produce the deeds. As such its not possible to re-mortgage or find investment to renovate.
Re engaging with somalia is in your own interests. as you have said yourself, "the place is f**** up"
Let us work together to improve the lot of our peoples...petty tribalism can only take you so far.

Again i ask you how re-engaging with a failed state will help us?
Did the World Bank and IMF provide aid tot he TFG or the TNG? or to Caydeed or any other self proclaimed governments of Somalia in the past 20 years?
please listen to yourself man, you are sounding crazy?

We are getting as much aid as we can and as somalia can get today.
and our aid is left to our own oversight unlike the proposed regime to be imposed on the Somali governments budget by the International donors.

Are you sure S/L's GDP per cap is $600? That would make it's overall GDP $2.1 bill (which is still horrendous if you think about it).

When I mean I don't care about GDP per caita, I mean I don't care about the individual population's income. I care about the country's economic standing, it's military capabilities, it's technological and cultural achievements. China and India might have a lot of poor people, but they still on their way to becoming the richest and most powerful nations on earth.

$600 is the figure you get for all Somalia, we both know it is not accurate, and Puntland and Somaliland should be at least 50% greater.
What technological achievements are you talking about? did you forget that we are a dirt poor under-developed african country?
we need to learn to crawl before we walk or run..

We should be pleased with the level of education we have today, the Somaliland government is targeting 75% literacy rate by 2015
not bad at all, but we have a long way to go and we should be comapring ourselves to Kenya which is at 90% rather than Uganda which is 66% today.

We need infrastructure better roads, and power... we have a long way to go.

and Millitary capability? it is crap absolute shit, we take comfort that the rest of somalia is worse off than us but its no excuse.
Eritrea which is dirt poor and has less than half the foreign currency than Somaliland and which is 50% bigger in population
has Su-27 fighters costing $15 million each and has lost of other gear, we have rusty old tanks and technicals.

correction eritrean as of the end of 2011 has about the same access to foriegn currency as Somaliland
due to their new gold mine getting them $250 million a year, but their remittances are now also equal to Somali land.

but this is 2011, they got all that gear between 1995 and 2010, when they had a lot less than Somaliland.

clearly," you can`t see the wood for the trees"!
Things are changing in the south of our country, the world is re-engaging with Somalia evidenced by the number of diplomats and UN agencies moving to xamar.
Somaliland has already seen the benefits of this new found confidence in Somalia. Turkey would never have come to somaliland if they weren`t already present in the south.

so you see, your region is already reaping the benefits of a stable south.

but how do you link this with Somaliland not isolating itself?

Somalia get aid, we get aid, and we are getting this aid even while we are isolating ourselves from somalia?

The reason why we have such low development is because of our association with somalia.
somalia brings nothing positive to somaliland, it only brings negatives.

you gotta be realistic and accept the fact that you are unlikely to be ever recognised as an independent state. Having said that, you should pragmatic and make the best of a bad situation.
today its shitty aid money your talking about, but in the near future we could be talking about billions in investments and revenue.
the sooner you come to the negotiating table the stronger your position will be.

turkish involvement with sl is a result of increased stability in the south. just imagine if the war is finally over in somalia. there are literally dozens of countries and their corporations who want to do business with somalia.

somalilanders shouldnt be afraid,,,,we all gonna get paid!
