Help Needed, Sultan Madar, Shixiri and Xaaji Suudi.

Post by X.Playa »

To All. Help and advice needed.

1-Regarding that image of Sultan Madar it was taken On Feburary 1899 just 6 months before the Dervish, Madar have cut ties with the Mullah whom he helped his Tariiqa since 1897 while the later repaid him by supporring his sultanship of Burco against the legitmate sultan Nuur. The original image was a photography and from the original a sketch ( the one posted by Siciid) was made and for some weird reasons the author chose the sketch to be in the book instead of the original photography. Now how can the original be traced and found?

I was searching for the original photography through the author's collection if I could locate it, one question could help and that is, why would the author choose a sektch over a photo? and the other question is how to locate the collections of these people be it private or public.

2-Regarding Xaaji Suudi i have managed to find 2 boxes of photos( Francis Wallace Grenfell album) of Sudan Mission where Xaaji Suudi served under Francis Wallace Grenfell at Suakin, i have sent an e-mail to the school located at Oxford UK to try to go through the images, the problem is they are 2 box of uncataloged pictures. So far no reply.

3-Cabdulaahi Shixiri, now this unlucky rascal have always managed to be in the middle of it, at least he had met the Italians half a dozen times , Iilg to Bender Qaasim, Hobbyo and Aden in 1903-1904. He was also captured in 1903 by the Italians , handed over to the British to Let. General Egerton the commander at Jidbaale battle 1904 , interviwed as prisoner of war by both the Italians and Brits.

Again from 1908-1909 he met half dozen times with the Italians and once with the English, but yet i can't find an image of him so far. He was also accompanied by Diiriye Caraale and Maxamed Habar-waa in Aden meeting with the Italians. During the Ilig negotiation him , Axmed Taajir ( brother of boqor Cusman) , Sheekh Cusmaan ( Hawiye and the Mullah's father-in-law) traveled to Aden via the sea on an Italian warship,. There are around 3 Italian and 1 British warships mentioned by name where Shixiri and some Dervish did their business on, even the Italian one that captured him around Bender Qaasim in 1903 is mentioned by name , but the name of the commander is elusive and unmentioned, so many clues but no luck.

RightWing could you please make this one a sticky, I need some feed back.

RW,

Thats a long shot, lets wait for few suggestions, i see the useless idoor haven't added anything yet , but lets see. Sultan Madar has the best chances for we know his picture was taken, now ina Shixiri despite not known if a picture was taken of him at least his opportunities were many , Xaaji Suudi has the least chance.

Tow more clues i have located 2 important leadings for Xaaji Suudi.

1-According to Lowther, Cecil, Sir 1865-1936, in his hunting book From pillar to post, in early 1890`he hired Xaaji Suudi as a headman to his expedition. I couldn`t copy the entire text (bottom of page 21 is missing where his statment of Xaaji Suudi or Xaaji Axmed begins) page 22 this what i got from him:

On the mission to king Johannas Xaaji Suudi accompanied Hewitt , and that was June 1884.

So which ever lead , there are 2 more authors that might taken a photo of Suudi.

Interesting article. I knews hajji Sudi was navy interpreter and worked for the british before derwish was born. laakiinse Sultan Madar and shixiiri were more visible than Hajji sudi and have more chances that their picture was taken and could be found state archives or university libraries.

Sultan Madar's picture was taken by that dude Charles Victor Alexander.

Somaliland : being an account of two expeditions into the far interior, together with a complete list of every animal and bird known to inhabit that country, and a list of the reptiles collected by the author (1900).

But the problem there is in his book he included a sketch of the photography not the real picture for some odd reasons.

Now Suudi been a crew of that ship HMS Euryalus his image could be found among the crews , at least he worked on that ship in 1883 and 1884.

In shixiri is a different story , he has done more mission with the Italians and always was in civilized zone on board of ships and in Aden , so he has a good chance too.

so over all of these 3 guys 2 pictures can be found with good search.
