Re: Former Mayor of Mogadishu Tarzan on BBC Hard Talk
He makes some excellent points and I do not doubt his honesty and determination. He could have put his points across better had he thought for a few seconds before he expressed himself. He was in a fighting mood and that really portrayed him as uneducated, unsophisticated and not a witty politician. He could pause and give answers in a better fashion. He came across as an amateur and that is really sad.
I know the programme format is confrontational, but still he could have done better. He could have simply said; Look I came, I tried and I left. I am ready to do everything that is in my power to help my people but there are alot of challenges.
He has done improvements in Xamar. He wants to do more but because of lack of institutions and impotent cabinet/MPs who are drawn through the vile 4,5 formulae.
The notion of shooting without due process could land him in jail in some western countries. It might haunt him because even in his adopted country, extra judicial killings are illegal.
He is a self-made man who was brought up in an orphanage and as he admitted, he does not have clan loyalty. And I understand his frustration because he has to deal with tribal bigots who are driven by primitive institutions.
I know many Somalis who lived in the diaspora and went back to participate in the political process. They have left their families behind and the main driving force is not building Somalia but to be called “wasiir” “ xildhibaan” etc. Their kids and wives are meanwhile leading a horrible life in the west and in most cases, they live on welfare.
Tarzan is different- or at least comes across as different. He seems to be driven by a desire to help Mogadishu and Somalia.
You cannot do that if the people you are dealing with are warlords, conflict entrepreneurs, and hypocritical wadaads etc who lack intelligence due to the psychological trauma of more than two decades.
The likes of Tarzan, Farmaajo and others should stay in the countries that have given them citizenships and do something for Somalia from the comfort of these countries. Their wives and kids need them. Leave Somalia to those who do not have the comfort of having their children in other countries.
