Forget about tiny Djibouti, Ehiopia has 70+ ethnic groups. Yes, there are issues here and there, but they haven't had a full scale civil war that devastated their country. In fact they are on the up, despite the immense poverty, they have a rapidly growing economy.

Lol its all about the geopolitics and nothing can be done locally!

Djibouti has and had a strong diplomatic relations with all the world even you can see now she uses the china card to encrease her income!

During the cold war djibouti was only dealing with france so it had good relations with somalia, ethiopia and southren yemen just like the west and the gulf countries

At that time berbera base was important bc somalia was pro-the eastren bloc so when it deported the russians from berbera the US and the gulf countries have started funding the regime

Afars had no chance since the independence unlike of mahara who use to be funded by ethiopia and southren yemen

That war was a political war not a liberation war, they just want to be part of the ruling party

They captured many afar towns but with the help of the french troops they got destroyed totally

Then in a negotiation with the mediation of france they got incorporated in the party and the cabinet

That group is now part and pro-ruling party

At that time djibouti was depending on the french troops but since then they started building a djiboutian strong army that can protect the country thanks to the unexpected afar attack

Its because of france empowering one againist the other also ethiopia having good relations with djibouti but asmara has tried to fund the afars after french warning from an intervention if asmara attacks djibouti but bc of the westren countries who are using the UNSC it didn't work for asmara. The UNMG was watching them closely.

At first, the french were using the afars against iisa

In the 60s they changed its colonial name from french somaliland to afar and issa territory to stop dijbouti joining somalia

Due to a UN and westren pressure to free djibouti so it can join somalia, the french have held a referendum about getting independence and joining somalia

Before the referendum was done, the french have deported half of the issa into awadal, aw barre and dirirdabe

So that why they still have a big populations in dirir dadhaba

In 61 referendum the afars have voted for the french rule for fear of joining somalia!

This has given the french a legal papares to stay and settle the things!

Siyaad barre has welcomed the deported iisa and started arming them in order to join somalia

The deportation has back fired france!

Due to this pressure, the french has reached with barre an agreement to hand the power over to issa until independence

Because of this the french have switched the sides and removed the afar pm

Before these arrangements there was a djiboutian somali nationalist who's called mohamud harbi who was fighting to join somalia but he dead before the agreement

Guuleed who was back then a french overseas mp has landed and formed the now ruling african popular party who fought peacefully for independence

Unlke of what siyaad barre was expecting, guuleed has said to him they can't join somalia because its not all somalia and if he wants khair he should support them to lead djibouti onto independence

According to guleed arabic interviews, siyaad barre has ignored all this and has threatened him with an army from saylac to mogadishu!

He said, he use to sleep all the day and work all the night so I was able hardly to listen him with an open eyes and then I would go to my bed!

He said he use to go to mogashu when ever he calls him without known why and then I have to take his orders!

He treated them like jabhad a not a political party!

Ethiopia has also thretened to annex the afar side

So at the end siyaad barre has accepted it to be an independent country led by a somali people

Guuleed said he was still considering barre "as the president of horn africa and the father of the somali nation" wich has made him " abit happy" but still was trying to dictate him wich has created a problem between them

By the end of the of the 80s, as he got weaker he started trreating them as a real country

Migisto and barre have met in djibouti in some IGAD meeting(IGAD HQ was made in djibouti due to the somali-ethiopian conflict) and agreed to stop funding each others opposition in wich mingisto arrested all the opposition leaders like abdullahi yusuf

Barre has also stooped his ogaden claims

However it was too late for both of them.

During the ogaden war, djibouti was secretly helping somalia with intelligence information by using her french bases.
