I remember doing the mistake of my lifetime once on the highway between Michigan and Ohio. I saw the flashing lights of a cop car in my rear mirror. I have been driving the whole night from Toronto and I was tired; I was craving for a cig too. So, I stopped the car and got out. The passengers in the car started shouting that I should put my hands on the steering wheel. I just wanted some fresh air. I lit a cig and the cop pulls a gun on me. I put up my hands and shouted that I am not an American. He asks; where are you from? I reply Europe and I could sense that he understood I was telling the truth. He approached me and asked her me for my driver's license; I provided it.. and he told me that I would have died minutes ago because in the USA if you are stopped you should shut the engine and put your hands on the steering wheel.

That was a close call bro. He's right one little mistake can cost your life. Whenever a cop pulls you over you have to remind him her what you are doing or else they'll think your up to some sneaky stuff and pull the trigger out of fear.

Garoweboy and KTS; the american cops are trigger happy. Just like on movies.

I was also stopped in Canada but the cops were friendly. In most of Europe, when I cop beckons you to stop, you do that when you find a place to stop; in Canada I discovered that you can even stop on the higherway!!

When I was younger I use to tell them to do one all the time...provide no id...don't tell them what I was doing/going.

Btw the kid was alive for 30 minutes after he got shot no ambulance or anything came.

They've left him to deliberately bleed to death. Thirty minutes is ample time for an ambulance to reach the scene; moreover, the same cop who shot him was properly trained to handle punctured wound until paramedics get to the scene.

What happened to Eric Garner was unfortunate, but lets not act like there's a xasuuq going on where cops are going around killing black people for no reason. Like I've said before, obey the law, don't act suspicious when stopped by an officer, and don't try to be a hero and do something stupid that will cost your life. A few cases where serious injustice was done doesn't negate the fact that a black person (and yes this includes Somalis) is more likely to be killed by another black person than by a white cop. The kid in this case pulled out a gun and pointed it at the cop...what do you expect the officer, who is mandated to eliminate any threat to his life, to do?

I was watching the video of it. Difficult to see what actually went on that led to the shooting. I think the problem in cases like this is the potential for them to escalate to lethal force rapidly.

If the police hesitate when dealing with a possibly armed assailant it might be them getting shot dead but on the other hand if it turns out the suspect wasn't pulling a gun or other lethal weapon they end up getting shot wrongly.

This is going to keep on happening as long as you have armed police and the expectation that suspects are likely to be armed. I don't know what can be done to address this problem given the prevalence of guns in US society. A topic I don't wanna get into
