Dhaanto was popularized by ONLF warrior poets and supporters, it was largely a tool used to rally the masses signifying the unique and sovereign cultural identity of the Somali people in the Ogaden region. It was the broke Somali entertainers who were invited by ONLF supporters to serve as entertainers at their events who saw an opportunity to exploit the traditional dance and ran to Ethiopia when they were offered large sums of cash.
