The goal of the EU project has always been to create one European country

Through out Europe's history the continent has always been locked in division and national rivalry and very often war. Until after the 2nd world war which saw Germany the industrial powerhouse of Europe neutralised, Britain the superpower of the day exhausted due to the war & with no options left but to release it's overseas empire only to focus on rebuilding itself. And finally France the second most powerful nation in Europe and an empire of its own beginning to get back on its feat after Germany's invasion of it and occupation of it's territory and Capitol city Paris during the war.

With the 3 man European powers of the day neautralised in the playing field the only standing power brokers on the European continent were the Russians or soviets as they were called and the USA. The Americans sat out in the early stages of the war and dealt to the Europeans weapons, spare parts and other materials in exchange for gold as payment not paper currency, this was boom time for them. They eventually joined the war once all players were beginning to wear each other out and saved the day for the allies(britan, France & soviets) after winning the war the continent was left with the USA and Russia as the power brokers. Britian the former super was now dependant on its former colonial project the USA, France wasn't faring any better itself and was also equally dependant on the USA too while Germany on the other hand was occupied by the US and the soviets.

The spoils of war for America was Europe, this was its price for joining and winning the war. To keep its new dependants from going back to their traditional inter European national rivalries and wars what the USA did was make them economically dependant on each other by pushing from behind the EU project, decades later the USA wants Europe to become not only a trading block (the EU) which is economically dependant on its member states but the USA also wants a federal European superstate with an EU president and an EU army as well as an EU navy. In essence we are watching the EU become a superstate.
