Was Socotra a Somali Island?

Post by HargeisaCade »

I heard somalis used to own the Island of Socotra of the coast of the horn of africa in the 1800s before it was sold to the arabs. I heard Cali Yusuf Kenaadid (or Yuusuf Cali forgive me for butchering the name) the ruler of the majerteenia sultanate had Socotra in the palm of his hands before ultimetely selling it to Yemeni rulers, of course today the island is located a few kilometers away from gobolka bari and its actually closer to somalia than it is to Yemen.

Also i heard the people live in Socotra (majority) are called the Meheri People, also known as Caraab Saalax inside Somalia, who today can be found around nugaal northern mudug area.

Im curious to learn about the Somali influences of this beautiful island if anyone knows more information please share

it never belonged to somalia or somalis, since ancient times it was in the yemeni cultural sphere

hindi, xabash, greeks, syrians and portugese went there before somalis, somalis started coming in the 1800's

thats the ugliest island I have ever seen.

No wonder we didn't annex it.

Lets hope they don't annex us by the way things are going these days
