Post by Galol »

We Somalis are not seafaring nation although we atre adventerous enough to work in it abroad(almost all somali migrants to europe worked as seamen straight from camel herding to ocean going ships)

Surria calling Sharks Libaax gave me an idea. What names of sea creatures do you kknow in Somali?

Please see which fishes and mammals you know theire Somali names:

Shark

Whale

Mackerel

Dolphin

Stingray

Manatee

Pilchards

Add as you wish

Lol@ beshakana. That is not Somali, but derived from Italian pesce (fish) cane (dog).

Danyeer's list is impressive, never knew such words.

you are correct sharks are libaax-badeed.

Somalis(or at least the fishing communities) have names for the various species of sharks.

Burcayd is the great white shark. Burcayd can also mean any ole kind of shark.

Shaqaawis is another species.

Haawilood = foetus of the shark

galool

you stole my words. Shocked

but before u start to learn about the sea creatures, maybe u should first brush up on the domestic Somali livestock.

Qurbac is a young male camel and ceesaan is a small female goat. Daanyeer had some fun at your expense.

mackerel in somali is tarraaqad

manatee is geel-maanyo or habarey-maanyo in the south.

i have no idea the word for dolphin.

I have no idea what a pilchard is.

nomenclature

I know the english definition of this word, but why do I remember its having a communist connection, Nomenklatura or something like that?

Any Gramscians out there?

I knew that cheeky monkey was up to something. I know ceesaan and qurbac but tell you what the bugger still fooled me.

And I knew about Tarraqad too. How about Zeytuux?
