I believe it's mostly due to Lack of Opportunity. Offering more financial aid on college level education, decent paying jobs and more money invested in inner-city schools can prevent people from wanting to risk prison.[/quote]
It's possible. But let's face it. Success begins at home, and Afro American youth will better be served with a stable family environment.
This comes as no surprise to me. The last statistic I read stated that there are only 85 eligible black men to every 100 black women here in the US. Guess where those other 15 are. Apparently this explains the sharp increase of African American women dating and marrying out side of their race with in the past 10 years. There is such a gap between the number of young black women in college to black men that many really don’t have much of a choice these days.

Megatron,
Though I would agree stable family is a major factor of kids stating in school, the problem is that you cannot have stable family environment when both parents aren't home. Most inner city kids grow up with one parent at home, and that one parent must work at least 8/hrs a day to put food on the table. In some U.S. cities, more than half of all high school-age students have dropped out. Without high school diplomas, these high school dropouts have no future. They are more likely to be unemployed, on government assistance or cycling in and out of prison. There should be a way to lessen high school dropouts in the inner city youth…while focusing mentoring and other after school programs, otherwise things will get much worst.

I couln't agre more. Even in middle class in the US both parents must work outside of the home to make ends meet these days. If these families find it stressful to raise their families properly you can imagine how difficult it is for a family with not very much to begin with.
Both of you make valid points. But why is that among successful families of any race or colour, where both parents are career acheivers, that their offspring are also usually successful ?

Magatron,
It depends where you go to school and where your family resides. Many inner city schools have support groups from local non-governmental groups....they rely on other support groups. But many of them have to go through about being Catholic to register their kids on certain good schools before they even listed their names as catholics. Andf if you are poor kid with single mother, you and your kid is out of luck......if that is what it is not that we would want in our society
Given the lack of education in America, if our kids are to born in this country, then these stats would be true, and then you and I would be bailing out our kids from jail, eh?
It’s due to that cycle you hear about every once in a while. The first thing id like to point out is that the majority of African Americans don’t fall into this categories whether single parent household or not. As for the unfortunate that do. Well let’s just say they don’t have very good role models and don’t realize how bad they are messing up their lives in till it’s too late.
