Re: Solar panels on every Tel Aviv rooftop!
I have thought of having solar powered wells & small buildings when I daydream.
Unfortunately, the few things that really have the potential to change things in Somalia like literacy, vocational education, and small industry are not that profitable.
Too many people looking to make a quick buck in Somalia and live the good life overseas.
It's already bad enough things like imports from basic requirements & qaat already strip the country of hard currency.

Re: Solar panels on every Tel Aviv rooftop!
in 20 years or less, Somalia has the potenial to become the richest nation in Africa, the field is wide open, from aviation, shipping, livestock, technology, medicine, tourism etc etc, if there was peace, somalia would see billions from tourism alone!, excellent weather and its location in the indian ocean can't be topped. somewhere, someone is going to strike gold, it won't be like 7 or 8 guys, maybe 2-3 guys with networths in the hundreds of millions, remember this, the world is running out of resources, whatever was worth $2 10-20 years ago is worth $8 today, so you don't need much to profit, everyone is hungry and they have their checkbooks out.
Re: Solar panels on every Tel Aviv rooftop!
In addition to violence, Somalia will be plagued by the same thing plaguing other African nations that have peace:
No skilled work, no industry, no hard currency, no cheap labor or great work ethic.
Without those things the best you could hope to become is a middle-man reseller of the products of some other country's industry. Even then, where would the hard currency required to buy those things come from when the population relies on foreign remittance?
If you don't have those things AND you don't control the purse strings that control investment then the best thing Somalia could ever become would be the West Indies or South Africa where rich foreigners could enjoy themselves while the population lives in squalor.
Industry spawns financial & political independence. Why do you think the Gulf Arabs' political clout in the world is so proportionally small in relation to their money.
They live life just like rappers. No political influence, but are free to eat, screw, and buy any consumer product they like.
I think Somalia needs a Mao.

think positive, you say somalia has no skilled workers, i say that's great, Somalia can benefit from the jobs Outsourcing will create. from retailers, call centers, auto manufacturing, to even bottling...remember coca cola few years ago?

its good to dream but before development
you need Soverignty.
This Free market Free trade bull they feed you in the Education system,
from highschool all the way to grad school, is just brainwashing to perpetuate the status quo.

The-Screw,
Don't get me wrong, I'm not thinking negative.....I'm actually thinking too positive that it's unrealistic.
I am thinking about how to change Somalia into a Singapore or Malaysia. It would require education & investment. I think businessman that operate in Somalia don't see these goals as important and only are in it for themselves. I would like to see Somalia draw lessons from the industrialized & industrializing nations.
Capitalism is brutal when you don't have the upper hand.
Even outsourcing requires skills that Somalis don't have like language or technical skills.
I wish there was a diaspora-wide initiative to introduce industrial & vocational education into Somalia.
Today's technicians, teachers & nurses would be tomorrow's engineers, scientists & doctors.

gurey25,
I think like China....they said: Phuk Capitalism....we'll embrace it on our own terms.
If they gave in way to early it would have been to Western companies what Bangkok is to sex tourists.

Re: Solar panels on every Tel Aviv rooftop!
That is true. I hope there aren't too many diaspora kids that have so thoroughly lost their identity they completely forget about doing anything for Somalia.
I had a bunch of different ideas I couldn't implement, some I'm chasing and some I put in a mental file cabinet for later use.
Networking is good, but sometimes you get stood up b/c your acquaintance is watching HitMan in Easton Mall instead of bouncing ideas off each other....looool

gurey25,
well there's different levels of control & bullying.....by boosting your industrial capacity & other knowledge needed to run a modern state, you are less prone to bullying & control.
Africa gets controlled b/c in some cases they can't even produce their own food. So you can imagine them getting crippling loans for even simple things like road construction or development projects.

Re: Solar panels on every Tel Aviv rooftop!
Somalia is one of the few countries where commercial solar power is actually viable, what with the intense amount of solar energy Somalia receives year round.
As to why Somalia doesn't have solar panels everywhere, let me put it to you this way:
Somalia has an oil refinery. Yes, there *is* an oil refinery in Somalia, yet Somalia imports all of its gasoline and plastics and what have you. The reason why is the oil refinery has been mothballed for decades due to the fighting.
