These warlords are more sophisticated than the previous ones.

To understand the extortion one needs to read between the lines.

1) Alshabab took over the main slaughter place in Mogadishu and rehabilitated it.

2) They are demanding from all meat traders to bring their meat to that main slaughter place where they can charge huge fees.

3) All other slaughter places are closed on the grounds of ''bad hygiene''..which is basically obstructing open comptition and monoplizing/centralizing the meat trade.

----

The traders who have refused to pay huge fees (read bribery) to Alshabab are prohibited to conduct their businesses on silly grounds.

Its all about money and political power, the two objective factors in every struggle.

In all fairness I don't think Shishkabab gives a rats tail about peoples "health" there is probably a motive behind it. In a humanitarian crisis You don't tell people what to eat and what not to eat

So you think they could just take the money from the meat traders without first fabricating excuses?
Yes.
It wouldn't be HALAL bililiqo.
Claiming that Al shabaab needs excuses to do what they do implies that Al Shabaab has support from the people of Mogadishu which you and many others have somewhat successfully argued against on many occasions. So which one is it? Al Shabab is supported by the people of Mogadishu and to continue to enjoy that support, they have to resort to making excuses for their decisions or are they a foreign entity that imposed itself on the people of Mogdishu that neither enjoys the support of reer Mogadishu nor is welcome in the region?

So why would AL Shabaab need excuses and justification from people they occupy? Wouldn't that mean they can do as they please and step on the neck of any who opposes them and break it.

Things are hard enough in Mogadishu without making it even harder to eat.

I think there is an economic motive although health is the mode used to achieve this. The motive is since kicking out the WFP, the fields are once again blooming. Even the U.N has said Somalia needs less food aid now by about half a million. Imagine this is only months after and the first harvest. Shabaab obviously wants to start a market within the nation for the farmers and nothing is better than pushing Somalis to think more seriously about vegetables.

For the one who said Shabaab is doing this because extortion wasn't possible. Since did they ever ask and say please? What fantasy does this guy live on? The guys take whatever they want and want they want. I remember a while ago a tax they imposed somewhere saying "there is jihad and you must contribute your share for the cause" and it was a statement not a question. I doubt anyone in the meat industry has the balls to speak against a "jihad tax" which is what they call their levies and risk being seen as a "murtad".

I think it is health as well as economic motive but nothing personal for their own coffers.
