Islamophobia in my opinion rests on several concepts:

1) The belief that many people (allegedly Muslims) plotting attacks in western countries live perfectly normal lives in the west while planning terrorist attacks feeds the belief that Muslims can't be trusted....that even if they seem friendly they may be plotting to kill you at the same time, and that this is somehow religiously acceptable in Islam (taqiyya).

2) The belief that Islamic countries make it difficult for non-Muslims to worship (i.e. Saudi Arabia has an absolute ban on any religion other than Islam, this includes bringing a personal Bible into the country for the more than one million Christians working there). Certainly many Muslim countries allow full religious freedom for non-Muslims-- the emir of Qatar even funded the construction of a church in his country. But places like Saudi, Egypt, Pakistan, Libya, and Algeria have made it difficult or almost impossible, usually through 'regulation', to permit churches, synagogues, temples, etc., to be built. Also many countries have 'blasphemy laws' which are very broad and can be used against any non-muslim religious minority almost at will.

3) The perception that Muslims overreact to perceived criticism or insults (yes the whole Danish cartoons incident, but also just the mere rumors of a Christian burning pages of a Qu'ran led to a mob in Pakistan burning several churches and houses). Even though these things are rare, they happen just often enough that people see a pattern and they wonder if this is what to expect from Muslims. Pakistan in particular has a history of vicious incidents of harassment of Christians, though Pakistan also has a history of attacks on Shia and Ahmadiyya as well.

Anyhow that's my take on Islamophobia.

But that makes me wonder: what are the possibilities of a Martin Luther King or a Gandhi type of person to use non-violent resistance in settling the war in Somalia or Israel-Palestine conflict? Could it ever happen in the context of those cultures?
