Navy look at other translations, the People of Araf are Honored people who know the dwellers of Jannah and dwellers of Jahanam by their marks, though these people have not entered Jannah or Jahanam yet. There is no purgatory or people who wait a time in between to enter Jannah after yomal qiyamah. I have never heard such beliefs.

the tafseer thou jaleyn explains: they are people who equaled theuir thanbi and their good deeds. and also al tabari in his tafseer say : قال أبو موسى : وحدثني عبيد الله بن أبي يزيد , أنه سمع ابن عباس يقول : إن الأعراف تل بين الجنة والنار حبس عليه ناس من أهل الذنوب بين الجنة والنار
they are prisoners people who are ahl al thonoub. their have laods of good deeds but at the same time have many bad deeds that it almost equals their thonoub and their hasanaat.
