Istanbul was a semi-popular name for Somali females long before Turks ever knew Somalia even existed.DropkickMurphy wrote:All this talk about Turkey is annoying. Can you pinheads please stop it.

I never encountered a female with that name let alone a Somali one. But whatever the case I wasn't talking about this topic. The entire general section is flooded with topics about Turkey and its prime minister's visit to Muuqdisho.Beenaale_No1 wrote:Istanbul was a semi-popular name for Somali females long before Turks ever knew Somalia even existed.DropkickMurphy wrote:All this talk about Turkey is annoying. Ma ila aragtay bal? Wallahi our names are beautiful...shit if I'm not naming my daughters/sons Somali names...at least it will be a Cushiatic one...none of those Arabic names or naming them after cities and days wtf
Re: "ISTANBUL": THE MOST POPULAR NAME FOR BABY GIRLS IN SOMA
I know what you mean. Just because we are muslims doesn't necessarily mean we have to abandon our culture, customs, traditions and way of life. Somalis are trying so hard to mimick arabs, who themselves are trying so hard to mimick the westerners. it is disgusting. They can't differentiate Islam from Arab culture. They are not the same people. You will rarely see Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Malaysian muslims named Arab names, they all have their indigenous names. But Somalis 98 percent of the times have Arab names. Some of you will point out how it is not arab names but rather Islamic name but Somali names if equally as beautiful.
My favorite Somali names is Ubax, Gulled, Sharmarke and Shankaroon.

I totally agree with you wallahi....and how does giving a child an Islamic name even going to help with anything? Lol I know that could be an ignorant comment but I just don't get it
Personally, my favorites are Asli, Ceebla (Ebla), Sucdi, Urji, and Haboon for females. For males, it is Liibaan and Guuleed

You are right those names are really beautiful. My childhood best friend was named Asli. I really love that name. What do you think of the name Geele and Geel-Qaad?
