Waryaa,
The terms waxgarad or aqoonyahan in the somali context mean some qabqable, a high school leaver, a college drop out. We are talking about a nation that loves titles; every mechanic becomes injineer. Every holder of a bachelor's degree is a dottore;

In short, another term for a loser.

An analysis of every aspect of somalis reveals that we are behind in human evolution. Perhaps we are the missing link between ape and mankind.

A sociologist by the name of Hubert Spencer in the 19th century is probably the one who pioneered social Darwinism as a term to describe backward societies. ALthough his work was met with criticisms (see e.g the vogue of spencer), it is worth looking at when one wants to understand somalis.

I think reporters and commentators are just lazy or unable to give those people who they collectively refer to as 'Somali intellectuals' an adequate description. It is easy to lump everyone under an unfitting/inaccurate but seemingly acceptable word.

If they had to be more specific, they would need to invent new somali words and do far more research on each individual to find out what they really are.

I think most of the so called intellectuals are not really at all that intelligent they just have some level of education and a whole lot of opinion on matters unrelated to their subject or level of education.
