I have a liberal mind towards dating/marrying non somalis. I have dated a non somali woman. There is hardly any problem of communication in the general sense. However, when it comes to the core (i.e. culturally bound communications) it is a challenge. A somali woman and I can communicate without saying a word to each other. There is a tacit knowledge embedded into how we request, give, love and curse. In addition, a somali woman and I don't need to practise what to say to other somalis since everything about culture is socially constructed in a context.

Hang on though, do all Somalis request, give, love and curse the same way?Lamgoodle wrote:I have a liberal mind towards dating/marrying non somalis. I have dated a non somali woman. And our culture is not identical really though there are some obvious things like why some people have 2 names which would suck to explain.

There are some who don't. But, the main point is that we have a set of tacit norms that are embedded in everything we do. You could love a non-somali,marry and live happily but we should not under estimate context specific social/moral capital.BlackVelvet wrote:Hang on though, do all Somalis request, give, love and curse the same way?Lamgoodle wrote:I have a liberal mind towards dating/marrying non somalis. Not neccessarily! But, what I meant was that tacit knowledge is important. Waxyaabaha qaar af kale maba lagu sheegi karo.BlackVelvet wrote:Isn't that a bad thing?Lamgoodle wrote: Lamanaayasha soomaalidda ah iyagoon isla hadlin ayaay isla noolaan karaa.
Dating someone who does not speak your language and who does not share your values, norms etc is like being an actor.

That's why I'm using this guy as an example, af Somali oo aad u fiican oo ku hadli kara. This way you speak the same language and obviously the person is interseted in Somali culture, probably more so than your average qurbo-koris.

Well, there is a difference between knowing a language, culture etc and being born into it. I know several languages but I don't have the tacit knowledge to engage in Shaxaarism for example
