Blatter sends condolences to Somalia

FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter has sent his condolences to Somalia after a bombing in Mogadishu killed several people, including Somali Football Federation President, Said Mohamud Nur.

President of the Somali Olympic Committee, Aden Yabarow Wiish, was also fatally injured in the attack, which took place at a newly-opened theatre as dignitaries celebrated a year since the launch of the country’s national television station.

Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali was also in attendance but escaped without injury. At least seven people are said to have been killed by the blast.



Blatter said: “I am shocked to hear about the attack that has today taken the lives of several people in Mogadishu, including the President of the Somali Football Federation Said Mohamed Nur and Somali Olympic Committee President Aden Yabarow Wiish.

“I knew both men personally and can only say good things about their endless efforts to promote sport and football in their country. They will be sorely missed.

“At this very sad time, my thoughts and those of FIFA and the worldwide football community are with the families and loved ones of all the victims of this attack, and especially to the football and sport family of Somalia.”

Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah expresses condolences after death of Somali Olympic Committee President

Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah, the acting President of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), has written to the Somali Olympic Committee to express his shock and sorrow following the death of Aden Yabarow Wiish, who was killed in a bomb blast in Mogadishu two days ago.
He was killed along with Somali Football Federation (SFF) chief Said Mohamed Nur and at least four other dignitaries who had gathered in Somalia's national theatre to mark the first anniversary of the launch of the country's national television station.

The explosion at the theatre, which reopened only recently, was seen as a symbol of the city's re-emergence, it is also the latest attacks on Somalia sporting targets.

"It is a black day for Somalia sports, I'm still very shocked by what happened in Mogadishu ", said Sheikh Ahmad in the letter.

"On behalf of ANOC Executive Council and its 205 members, I would like to extend my profound condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Mr. Yeberow.

"Mr Yeberow dedicated himself to the Olympism and showed an excellent example to the world that the power of sport could unify a country torn apart by civil war."

"The Olympic Family including ANOC will be surely standing side by side with Somali Olympic Committee and the people of Somalia in this most difficult time and offer any necessary assistance needed to recover from this tragedy as soon as possible."
