hyper - It builds strong character to be self-sufficient in life & makes you a better role model for your children, someday inshallah.

Don't ever rely on another human-being for something you can do for yourself, it's not the same feeling. Plus, nobody will ever actually do it like you would want it for yourself.

Be open to try new things & experience life, you only live once.

@Adali & Alpha - Most non-organic milk lasts just as long, if not more. I don't understand. :?

Raw camel milk when I was young, never cow though. Cow milk in raw form is potent and full of harmful microbials. Ever tried almond milk? Horrible.

I really haven't seen milk last a month before. Sounds like preservatives to me.

I've been debating trying raw milk, but I think I'm over that phase lol. And no, I've never bothered with milk that isn't from something with a mammary gland

Organic milk lasts longer because they heat it to an extremely high temperature killing all bacteria in it. :|

I think that's called pasteurizing, which is a legal requirement for all milk.

Nope. Pasteurization only is usually for regular milk, organic milk is heated to an ''Ultra High Temperature'' and kills all the bacteria.

Pasteurization of milk was suggested by Franz von Soxhlet in 1886.[4] It is the main reason for milk's extended shelf life. High-temperature, short-time (HTST) pasteurized milk typically has a refrigerated shelf life of two to three weeks, whereas ultra-pasteurized milk can last much longer, sometimes two to three months. When ultra-heat treatment (UHT) is combined with sterile handling and container technology (such as aseptic packaging), it can even be stored unrefrigerated for 6 to 9 months.

Ultra-pasteurizing. Whoulda thunk it. But, that isn't what makes milk organic. That has to do with the process the milk is produced and the state of the cows.

Alpha - I found the answer.
Organic milk lasts longer because producers use a different process to preserve it. According to the Northeast Organic Dairy Producers Alliance, the milk needs to stay fresh longer because organic products often have to travel farther to reach store shelves since it is not produced throughout the country. The process that gives the milk a longer shelf life is called ultrahigh temperature (UHT) processing or treatment, in which milk is heated to 280 degrees Fahrenheit (138 degrees Celsius) for two to four seconds, killing any bacteria in it. Compare that to pasteurization, the standard preservation process. There are two types of pasteurization: "low temperature, long time," in which milk is heated to 145 degrees F (63 degrees C) for at least 30 minutes*, or the more common "high temperature, short time," in which milk is heated to roughly 160 degrees F (71 degrees C) for at least 15 seconds.

Didn't know this, interesting!

What about camel milk?

Alpha - You're more gutsy than me if you're willing to try raw milk.

FDA bans it here, not sure about Canada. Same thing with non-pasteurized European cheeses. Not sold here.

Alph, Dude, I know what organic is :|

They purposefully heat organic milk to that very high temperature because it takes longer to travel to stores, since its not as commonly produced as regular milk.

Avi,

Yeah, from what I know it's currently illegal to sell unpasteurized dairy here. I was willing to try, to see what the fuss is about. And it seems ultra-pasteurization and fine filtration are what keep higher-end milks longer on the shelf.

I see. So you're saying organic milk is required to be heated at higher temps? Gotcha.

@Saraxnow. Yeah, that's what the link says. Interesting, just learned something new today. :D

Adali - My bread lasts 10 months, by then it's multiplied in to 10,000 and has declared a country of its own in my fridge, not yet recognized.

What's your point, man? :|

Alpha - Wasn't aware there was even a fuss about raw milk. Even back home, people had the better sense to boil cow milk, simply because it has way more pathogens than camel & goat.

Ever tried camel milk?

hyper - If you're eating yogurt, you're good to go. Another great source of calcium right there and probiotics.
