Bariis I was with a group of FOBS mostly girls, because I really do not know how to FULLY socialize with them I just remained quite, they took that as a sign that I couldn't keep up with their reer magaalnimo and thus had to be a FOB.

I've never met a young FOB before so I wouldn't know how they behave. Are they the ones who try so hard to be Westernized that they look ridiculous?

Qorraxay,

Sometimes the 24yrs olds aren't faking the fact they don't speak Somali. It is 21 yrs that Somalia is anarchy. When this 24yrs old was brought to the West he was 4yrs old...and if his parents didn't teach him Somali there is no way he/she will learn Somali. Usually the kids whose parents spoke the language( English) are the ones that don't speak much Somali. The best kids are the kids that have their grandparents in the house..Those learn the language because it is the only way they comunicate with them..

its not them, its the somali language that makes it difficult to learn. somali is essentially an unrecorded language learnt only by oral tradition.

but if you were to blame someone, you would blame somalia. somalia is the failed sate made him unable to return to his home to learn his language naturally. there is no mandate for somalis who arrived in the early 90s to speak somali.

You can't be mad at diaspora for forgetting their native language, especially younger people. For example, my mom single-handily raised me and my siblings in the United States. She would be gone at work ALL DAY meaning that the person that spoke Somali the most to us spent most of the time outside of the house. The point I'm trying to make is that the people that forget their language go to school and speak another language, watch TV in another language, and eventually begin to communicate with their siblings in that language because there is no authority figure in the house to make Somali the standard language. The kids I knew growing up that spoke the best Somalis were the ones that had their gparents and habayars living in their houses that didn't work

Although I must admit there are probably a handful of Somalis who purposefully forget Somali because they want to appear more western. RACE TRAITORS!

What's somalia's failure as a state gotta do with a grown folks not being able to speak somali fluently? The only reason anyone should have for not speaking somali whereever they may be is if they are not raised in a somali household where the primary language used is Somali. Being born into two somali parents whom both use somali as their lang for communication N ending up not speaking somalii is impossible. unless the language spoken at that house was a diff one. N even so, such cases would be small in number N not everyone who claims to not speak fluent somali could use that reasoning. Besides, I don't even c how that's possible.

It's not our fault we can't speak Somali properly I don't speak Somali at home I speak English and my parents speak in Somali but mix it with English sometimes. My siblings and I only speak English and when we attempt to speak proper Somali and not the little words we get laughed at. It was so embarrassing when you meet a Somali in public and they speak Somali and you reply back in English. But Alhamdulilah since I started Uni I made friends with some F.O.Bs and some non F.O.Bs who speak Somali fluently and that's all they speak when we're together and they don't laugh at me when I attempt to speak it. The only problem is I mix up Somali accents due to this. I go from reer xamar to normal Somali to northern Somali it's a bit stressful wallahi :(
