Are you advocating Somalis to abandon the camel 'cause it's associated with Arabs?
 where did that come from?

I rather die than have Somalis lose the important stature of the camel. :lawd:
Why do you love them when you have never touched them or owned them?

Even If I were to abandon my camels, what do you suggest I should do with my 100+ camels back home? sell them off?

Grandpapa,
I love the camel too. But, that was not my point.

My point is this; we should embrace farming and abandon camel mentality.

I agree Bedoin mentality is alot worst than sheppard mentality. All the Prophets (SAW) were sheppards, not nomads.

Waan fahmay laakin you just said let's embrace farming you didn't suggest what we should do with the millions of camels roaming the Somali lands. Xagee la gaynaya geela intaa le'eg? or are you saying we should utilise them for ploughing?
Surely you can't just discard camels just like that. Suggest alternative use baan ku leeyahay.

I think this is the most interesting piece that I've read from you so far and I say this because it was emotive. I was offended in the first paragraph then I could only laugh as I realised and accepted some of the truth of your words and finally pride as I thought of my love affair with salbuko

You raise valid points and like you I never did understand the blacksmith, fisherman, farmer issue. That said going back to your first paragraph Lord have mercy could you have piled on any more insults?

Grandpapa, waa sidaasi.

Ismaciil, I am not calling for the slaughter of camels. What I am saying is 1) not only somalis are herders; in fact, the majority of somalis are farmers, fishermen, businessmen etc 2) the camel is wrongfully potrayed as a symbol of our identity.

It seems that some people only read the title. :o :o

Blackvelvet, how are you doing niece?

Good that you liked it. The first paragraphs created the scene. I am a middle aged angry man. Blv you me, somalis are viewed that way. In Europe, people are talking about devising "the final solution" ( Hitler's jew solution).

The first paragraphs concerned how the world views us. Walaahi, all those words are used to describe us.

LOL@@@@@@@@salbuko

I'm good and hugely optimistic about the future of our country that may be because I am not yet middle aged or angry

Seeing as we seem to have become the Jews of South Africa to an extent it would be wise to avoid it in Europe. To be honest I see where you are coming from when it comes to certain behaviours that some people display. But where I am everyone is working and contributing to the economy. All the Somalis I can count off the top of my head are either students, self employed business owners or employed tax payers. Granted I am not around too many Somalis but still I think it is very easy to exaggerate the bad and ignore the positives.

We have been optimistic the last 20+ years and nothing has changed.

Indeed, there are some good people but the majority of somalis in the diaspora are losers. I am generalising, I know .

How many somalis live in London? how many of them are on welfare? how many somali kids make to universities? Too few compared to other societies.

Have you been to southall? Streatham? Wood green? Ealing? and other areas? The story is the same; men loitering the streets, kids on qaad ; Truancy is frequent.

When I go to certain areas I see that the High Street is full of Somali owned businesses that is something positive. What the men who sit inside some of those shops do with their lives God knows but almost every Somali in my neighbourhood has been to uni. Sometimes I think it comes down to your own perception - you see what you want to see.

Blackvelvet,
In Mainland Europe and in the UK, somalis are viewed as parasites who live on welfare. There is some statistical facts to support that too .

The causes are not that analysed though; tough labour market regulations, lack of jobs, discrimination and institutional hinders are some of the reasons; another is the failure of somali family institutions; a third one which is circulating in the informal discussions relates biological evolution.

Yes, indeed there are some somali owned business but most of them operate in the black market; no taxes paid, it is a business based on imitation rather than sound business rationale. In addition, it is very likely that the family of the business owner is living on social security; divorces of conviniences to get welfare provisions is common.
