:o How fascinating. They were more likey Djiboutians than Somalis. French had no access to the land of Somalia in the late 19th century. But nevertheless, the photos shows an advanced people with their women decorated as much as the French women themselves. Look at the amount of pearls and ornaments on the woman. The turban head was fashionable and deemed exotic in the 18th and 19th century. I say, they fair out well. I mean, we cannot attribute Somalis or djiboutians with the same level of civilization, but looking at its content or context as a traditional authentic people - the photo actually honor Somalis than caricature. Being in a zoo or not, that irrelevant. :dj:

It was a good job, most of the somalis in these shows were hired from Aden on contracts base around 1912 to 1913. Also there were Arabs, Indians and others. Basically it was an exihibt, where somalis acted out their way of life and custom, they even had their own mullahs to teach kids the religion.

I actually like the poster. The Somalis look fierce, noble and wild. They look much better than the fragile, weak looking Somalis of today.

Why is it that the Somali men of old grew their hair long like Afars of today? But the modern Somali insist on following the Blacks cutting their hair short and lining it up.

do you even know what they used to do to get their hair like that? they would fill the hair with butter so it can be pressed down? watch the 4:44 mark of this video. its shows how the afar do it and I guess thats how old school somalis did it too.

 They probably volunteered. But seriously you can't blame the victims in human zoos, call it early modern slavery. Europeans just have a thing for exotic items/places/people.

you seriously can't believe that. what would nomads in the 1800s want with money? did money even exist in somalia back then? why would they agree to have their families ripped outta the only land they know to go to some foreign country to entertain some white skin people? how do we know they even returned to somalia?

the paid vacation theory makes close to no sense.
