This most certainly is swept under the rug. It's evident that its becoming an epidemic. Lately, they've been holding Domestic Abuse lectures (Islamic) in my area.
There are plenty of women who abuse their men as well. Especially, the miskiin men who are good to their wives.

The first time I hear this saying and it seems there is some truth to it. Image

Aisha that is horrible. I believe it has to do with the fact that she would be a single mother trying to raise all her children without a father. Some women can't bear the thought. So once they have recovered and he tells her to come home, she does.

The older generation knows it's wrong (Usually), it's just frowned upon to "interfere with a spousal dispute"....no excuse from younger gen though.

I wonder how these boys laughing would handle it if they knew their sister or cousin was put in a hospital by her husband. I am praying that this is just your internet jokes, though this is no laughing matter.

Seems like this issue is more prominent than I thought. :(

Ogadens are the biggest offenders of this type of behavior, it's very well known fact that Ogaden men (because of their dhaqan) to go smash their women the first night of marriage to let em know who the man of the house is.

Divorce and abuse both definitely exist in the Somali community. A lot of the latter is behind closed doors and knowing Somali pride, those big jilbabs are probably used to hide the bruises and scars.

Never heard of divorce with Somalis, and infact thought it was so taboo that, well, you'd be ostracised if you did. Growing up and meeting more Somalis changed my perspective completely - Especially after going to Djibouti! (No offense Djiboutians)

Now....I am very sad to hear that my belief that Somali men didn't have it in their nature to physically beat their wives has been changed as well - broken front teeth, broken bones.... I am hearing many stories of women who are either dealing with a husband who beats them, or have divorced because of it. I thought that was an arab problem?

Is this a new problem, or has this always just been kept under the rug? :(

Someone admitted here not too long ago that he hid the phone from his mother when she was being assaulted by his father.

Domestic violence exists and I'm sure if most Somalinetters here were to witness it, they'd be on their abusive father's side
