Ina adeer, Swat teams and rescue operations don't operate that way. They need information of the number of hijackers, what they are armed with. After they access all relevant info, then they adopt the best scenario to storm with the most minimum casualties. Tiring the hijackers plays a huge role on the element of surprise. They would only storm earlier if they believe the hostages are in immediate danger.
I think he is one of the dozens of ISIS supporters whose passports were cancelled by the Australian government. It could also relate to the little publicised anti-terror raids which took place in Sydney earlier in the day.

Man taken into custody after early morning terror raid in Sydney
A MAN from north west Sydney was taken into custody on suspected terrorism related offences during a raid this morning by counter terrorism units from the Australian Federal Police and NSW Police.
The Daily Telegraph can confirm that an operation took place this morning in the suburbs of northwest Sydney. The allegations reportedly related to financing to send people to Syria.
One man is currently being questioned at Surry Hills police station and is expected to be charged to appear in Central Local Court later today.
It is not yet known if this event is linked to the events which have happened in Martin Place today.

You are right it is an inside job... nothing to do with terrorism though.
Tonight is the budget plan announcement for 2015. Can you imagine the uproar $10 billion cut will cause? The public will not be happy with such axe. They couldn't have chosen a better time to distract people.

Hmm! That sounds a game-changer and something to ponder upon.
I read news links of some of the main Aussie news agencies and not even one person entertained the thought that it might be a diversion from the pollies and the majority of the commenters are having a field-day with racist & Islamaphobic comments. Whether it has something to do with corrupted politics or this guy is a lunatic who chose this day strategically, it seems the aim is achieved.

The gunman identified as
Man Haron Monis, a self-described Iranian cleric, who was known to the police and was recently charged with more than 50 allegations of indecent and sexual assault. He first came to attention of the police when he penned poisonous letters to the family of dead Australian soldiers seven years ago:

He even has a Wikipedia page:

I think he's just a typical sheikhul kulli, like a shaxaari sheikh type? lol
In the first link I posted there is a small clip where he speaks, from an old video, and in there you can sense he's not a normal person. Something is off about him.

I am watching the news and my conclusion is that this guy's action has nothing to do with religion. It seems to be the case of a thug who came to the conclusion that he will end behind bars for a long time; and seek media attention. The question is why is he using the ISIS flag? isn't ISIS anti-shia?
It seems that the hostate situation is over...

lol great minds

I checked and they're all well. How are you Amira?
Plus the stuff about inside job, interesting and convenient timing. Using 3 human lives for military & budgeting reasons though? idk, it's been done before.
