Where did you read she was in the desert for 'days and days?' If that was the case, and without food, then she would've been dying of thirst and starvation. No sane person expects a ravenous and thirsty woman to breast feed. I wasn't.
But that is not the story as told. This is how it is told. Abraham leaves Hagar with new born Ismail in the sun scourching desert. It's hot, she feels thirsty and worries about Ismail and finding water. In great distress, she runs back and forth between two hills (forgot their names) in the process the Zam Zam water sprung up. Period.
Now, if you have alternative version let me know. I'm interested to read.
