I think best friend is just another word for your closest friend. You can have many close friends, but there is always that one friend you can count on 100% who you see as a sister. Even if one has many close friends I think psychology there is always one that you expect more from, trust a tad bit more than the others and the first one that comes to mind when in need of something or to talk.
I agree the term best friend sounds a bit primary school and changing those heart necklaces that's divides into two..
But yeah, best friend for me is the one I can rely on with my deepest secrets, financial help (when unmarried) and loyalty and tell me the truth no matter if it hurts me
