It seems as if everything is aimed at denying clan or making clan out out be mutually exclusive to Soomaalinimo. Clan is part of Soomaalinimo and Soomaalinimo may or may not be a monolith personality but it is defined by the social, cultural, physical trends subjectively identified— for political reason - across communities and Somali regions.
Somali Clans are not imaginary they are important social units (extended families). Who's sole function is to act as a support base in which you can rely on.
I understand that it's part of the culture and all but Somali people use clans in a bad way. Even if it's part of the culture does it mean we can't criticize it?
Look, the Scandinavian people also have/had clans and so do the Scottish but you don't see them killing each other over such things or saying that Stockholm belongs to Bah Johnson . They don't even care about such things. Kids grow up in Sweden not knowing what their Clan was. They dropped this sad part of their culture a long time ago.
Somalis have gone too far and made Qabiil not only part of culture but their ENTIRE culture. Some Somalis even breathe Qabil instead of oxygen
Its not simply part of culture. ITs part of being Somali and its part of Somali systems of life.. If you do not have Somali ethnic clan then you are not a Somali. Now you cant compare us to other groups of people, i think as somali people we have our own unique Social Reality.
You can critic but its got to be a fair one. In the sense that its from an holistic look at the dynamic of Somali society, unfortunately our social structure is always being scapegoated and negatively stereotyped by people who are ignorant about its function and important role in Somali society. Conflict in Somalia is not happening because of Clan. Thats just nonsense.
Clans are not an ideology/cult or a written doctrine that preaches violence or division. Clans are just social units. The underlying problem has to do with the mistrust an authoritarian central govt fostered on the somali people. It was mainly the unequal distribution of resources and unequal powersharing and the injustice of Communist regime that caused the war not because Clan A hates Clan B.
Reinforcing this mistrust against a centralized state is newly common practice to organize a political party somewhere and claim presidency over a given region.
Of cource clan is used as an agent but not the problem or cause itself, just like politics, race, color, nationality are used as agents in war & conflict. In the absence of Clan there would have been war and in the absence of Islam wars would have taken place.
Most wars throughout history happens due to Resources and Land. Thats why far more emphasis has to be placed on greed, wealth disparity, and its effect on the human condition.
