Somali20003, you're missing the bigger strategic picture. A fissured and fragmented Harti block means less security for constituent blocks, like Warsangelis. It doesn't bode well for Maakhiir state simply because it will arouse latent expansionism in Isaaqs, with Isaaqs now able to prey on Warsans alone and then move on to dhulbahante and then, ominously for a southerner, to Majeerteenia. NoAngst, A powerful Maakhir and Puntland will effectively and jointly combat the secessionists Isaaq. You have to understand the realist concept of the SECURITY DILEMMA by Bary Pose who argued that intense military or ethnic conflict(read ethnic as clan) in collapsed states has been highly probable. Maakhir is part of the successor entities that emerged out of the wreckage of Somalia and since its people are known to be peaceful and historically independent clan, the Iidoorland wouldn't be alarmed of its potential capacity to aborting its dream of statehood. Due to the prevailing political condition in Somalia, every clan is afraid of other clan but once that fear is moisted rather than stoked by belligerent leaders, I think peace will reign.

Let me say that the Harti compact is more of illusive than reality and its application of groupness or cohesion won't help if Sanaag is attacked today by the Somaliland because we Warsangeli singlehandedly stood as the bulwark of our country's defense. Remember, Adde's departure to Dubai when SL troops neared to capture Dhahar. As a matter of fact, the biggest security threat Maakhir faced came from Puntland aka Majeerteeniaya than Isaaqland.

Angst, I missed your satirical point of the desolate nature of the North. Not all of the North are desert and desolate land scape. The Al Madow Land Scape is a magnficent and attractive pasture with waterfalls and fertile area. Galgala alone exports many types of fruits. Besides, our region is a major candidate for oil , gas, and minerals. It is very rich region once its resources are tapped.

Ironic that the 'desolate' northeast is in better shape politically, economically than the south with the bountiful rain. Land is never an issue, it's the ingenuity and resourcefulness of people that make or break a society.
