I have no idea sxb, but according to my mj relatives..........siyaad barre paid one of sharmaakes nephew to kill him in lascaanood so he can declare marshall law and take over the whole country, it was a sad day for dabayaco young and old alike, allpuntland.com at that time compared it to a stab in the heart with quule spear.

"Although used to clan rivalry, border disputes, drought, and occasional famine. By the mid-1970s the Somali Democratic Republic seemed close to conquering them all. Under its authoritative President, Siad Barre; the country appeared to have wealth, progressive infrastructure, adequate food, and a high standard of education and medication."

Re: The 1969 Coup in Somalia?
The 60's governments despite it's flaws was the only time in somali history where there was party politics and not clan politics, the so called kacan was the destruction of democracy and the begging of foreign dependence, as the dictatorship survived on foreign aid and any minuscule positives that came from that kacan was overwhelmed by the negatives it has brought to our country and is still does to this day.
"The high levels of cold war generated foreign aid that somalia received funded an expansive but unsustainable patronage system and civil service. The subsequence freezing of that aid by western donos in 1988-89 led to the rapid withering of a central government left virtually devoid of resources.
Funded almost entirley from external sources the somali state was castle built on sand although complete state was not inevitable in the post cold war period, a general condition of state failure was"
This is not even looking the massacre of civilians by the so called government, but the economic, social problems created by the kacaan and depend on foreigners.
Anyone who thinks the kacaan was good for Somalia is delusional!

You're right. The weak, corrupt civilian government was better.
Lets be honest here, what did the Kacaan achieve really? Aside from building pretty much everything, teaching Somalis how to read and write, making higher education free, fighting to liberate Kelinka 5naad, refusing to be exploited by foreign companies who offered 80-20 for our oil.
Seriously even Stevie Wonder can see that Somalia is better off today than it was under the dreaded Kacaan.
