Sometimes, the marital status is in dispute. I have heard of numerous occasions when a woman is about to be married, a guy pops out of no where and claims to be her husband. You are then sitting there, wondering what the hell is going on. After parting with some $$$, you can get him to "divorce" so that you can marry her.
This is a scam gone wrong.

But in this case, they were already living together or were ok with the deal. I don't think there was a dispute between the two men.
