Re: Why aren't we using this alphabet?
Why? Because of pride and vanity? Such qualities are to be blamed of why somalis are so low as they are.
Re: Why aren't we using this alphabet?
Waayeel,
Give an arabic novel (without all the dhamma, kasra, fat7a etc) to a pakistani. Let's see if he can 'read' like you. They can't even pronounce certain letters to save their lives.

Precisely Zubeir! National pride and vanity, not clan sentiment.ZubeirAwal wrote:Why? Because of pride and vanity? Such qualities are to be blamed of why somalis are so low as they are.
National pride, vanity and cultural grandeur is what sets nations apart. Paltry contentment, meekness, humility and other traits averse to ambition we do not need.
Repeat this five times each day young Padawan...The Somali is Supreme

well that is why Hutus are the only ones to have been enslaved by Majerten, Hutu daboole.GeoSeven wrote:I'd rather a native script written by a Majeerteen than a foreign one. Arabic script, we wrote in it prior to the English arriving at our shores, and in a matter of time we shall do so, again.

Zubeir is right, before colonial times the learned would use the arabic language to write their messages in, it was only natural, to borrow from the Quraan the method of transmitting information.
Independence came and for 9 Years, 2 governments, the official language was Italian, the writing was in Italian, then in 1972 the official language became Somali, the script of my great uncle Shire Jaamac dating back to the 1950s was adopted, of course he did not create his own letters and characters but the script is indeed credited to him, there is more to a script than the apparent characters, see a Danish can't read english nor can an english read german.
I believe natural evolution of the script should not be taken back, like Zubeir suggesting to revert back to Arabic, I believe in this day and age, we either go forward and create a sophisticated coding language for our writing system or we simply change the characters of our current script as suggested by abdi.ismael.

Politics, Language and Thought: The Somali Experience By David Laitin pp-121The Majerteen saw themselves as the backbone of the Somali struggle for independence. They looked down on the Marehan as "Bush People".
The sad thing is, the only people they looked down on was you.

true !!!! these people struggle learning the Quraan, arabic language is more easily spoken by a Rer Miyi Somali than Pakistani Arabic language professor.Cherine wrote:Waayeel,

Re: Why aren't we using this alphabet?
I think we should keep the latin or adopt a whole new one, there is a gadabuursi script to made my the late ugaaz nur
We should not go for arab because we are not arabs, the osmania script looks like geez reminds me of the amxaar, we need something unique, kadarrre is not to bad either

Majerten look down on me, is this suppose to be an insult ? what mountain must you climb inorder to look down on a son of Sade.

Re: Why aren't we using this alphabet?
Their point of pride was freedom fighting and not enslaving others as you'd like to portray, and ironically they only people they did look down on in that reality was you and not anyone else.Adali wrote:Who ? what are you ? too many multi-nickers in this place, its hard to tell who is who, but you stink of dhaboyaco/hutu cross breed.Fall wrote:Adali wrote: well that is why Hutus are the only ones to have been enslaved by Majerten, Hutu daboole.
