Are there a lot of Somalis in New Zealand? After I finish my studies I'm planing to go there. Or maybe some state in the U.S with not a lot of Somalis....idk man but I'm defo leaving the U.K for somewhere else when I'm done with education.
Not aiming to stir gender issues here, but why are our boys failing so badly and becoming criminals? Why is this an attractive or even optional way of life for them, compared to Somali females (who, let's be honest, do far better as a whole with their lives, though culturally they are more prone to criticism)? It can't just be "broken homes" because it affects their sisters equally.
YummyMummy dont generalise. Bad parenting is to blame. In all likelihood these men started following the wrong path when they were still youngsters and their parents gave them too much freedom and didnt correct their behaviour. I see 12-17 year old white/black/somali/asian kids out at 9, 10, 11pm and it makes me wonder where their parents are and why they are letting them out so late. Most Somali parents dont even know what kind of people their kids are hanging out with, waxay garan wayeen keep your kids close and their 'friends' even closer. And the truth is that many Somali parents are overburdended with 10 kids they regret ever having jad lol.
Mashallah I know one really intelligent Somali mother who tells her kids to invite their friends for breakfast/dinner 1 by 1 so she can assess them and know (a) what kind of people her kids hang around with and (b) what those people have going on in their lives and (c) which friends they need to dump or they are forbidden from seeing. She then punishes and incentivises them to stop hanging wiht the wrong people. Good on her.
I'm not generalising walal, I genuinely find it an unsettling and rising pattern that will doom the next generation if it is not fixed, hence my worry and inquiry.
Also I think "bad parenting" is a shitty cop-out, excuse my french. I hear politicians, schools, social workers, police (all agencies) use it as an excuse to hide their failings, in their policies, practices and procedures. Also, short-sighted naughty kids will do short-sighted naughty activities regardless of the vigilance of their parents.I have worked with Somali mothers for several years before starting my current role and 99.99% of the time they are well-intentioned and very pushy. The only downfall I find about the mothers is the lack of English which short-sighted naughty kids (mostly boys in my experience and crime/jail statistics reported in the media) use to their advantage. They are doing the most they can, and I am proud of them maa shaa Allah. Laakin they need all the support they can get, not be vilified as "bad parents".
I am more interested in why these short-sighted naughty boys (and some minority girls) make the bad life choices they do, because let's face it, when you are old enough to go to jail then clearly some wrong choices were made along the way. Why were they more attractive than conventional/safer options?
