Most of mosques are managed by charities / Non-profit, and they collect their donations thru the non-profit designation. Mosque expenses, including imam salary, are managed from there.

It seems folks are going full spree on the Islamic scholars in this thread. I think it is dangerous to issue blanket statements to lump all of the sheikhs into one category and declaring them as fraudulent. Of course, there are bad apples, but overwhelming majority of them are good decent human beings who are carrying the da'wa and preaching it day and night.

It is amazing to find young men and women who memorize the entire Qur'an, and learning Islamic jurisprudence in the diaspora. This great learning experience is happening due to the guidance and involvement of these same sheikhs that people are badmouthing in this thread. You will hardly find these young men finding themselves in the prison system as it is common for many young Somali males in nowadays.

It is very possible that the people who are attacking the ulema are themselves not Muslims, but either Christians, Atheists, or who knows. If I am mistaken there are clear ayats and hadiths prohibiting any character assassinations against the Ulema. People should not be scapegoating them unless there are clear evidences.
