As is always the case, census methodology /data can be questioned. The best way, if you do not agree with the figures is to conduct a new study/falsify this study.

There are many anomalies; gender, rural/urban/nomad. Gedo, Banaadir and to some extent Galgaduud have more females than men. I wonder why? What happens to girls in Bakool, middle Jubba, Hiiraan and Sool? This will probably provide ammunition to feminists and might raise eyebrows. Too high mortality rate?

The rural/urban/nomad classification is also probably wrong. So is the case of IDPs

But whether r we like it or not, whether we call it fake, these figures will underlie every decision taken by the international community.

It will not surprised if these figures are used for power sharing.

I doubt Woqoyi Galbeed has more people than Banadir, but it is possible.

What I find interesting is that Bay, which everyone thought had a huge population is average. I think that Bay has a population much higher than listed here.

All they did was base the estimate on the last census in 1975, and assuming the average growth rate of 2.5% to 3%.
They ignore the fact that there is a higher mortality rate due to war and famine, at least half a million died from the 90s onwards from war and famine and disease.
They also ignore the large refugee population and immigration.

A good ball park figure would subtract at least 2 million from this figure giving something like 10 million.

but then again this is guess work we have no new data to extrapolate from.

However if the people who thought that the 1975 census was highly inaccurate and gave a low estimate of the population.
These wild guess may actually give you the correct figure.
I would not be surprised if those figures the government got out of their ass turns out to be close to the exact figure.
Another clue could be the Somali region in Ethiopia.
We have recent census figure fro 2004 and they are 5.318 million.
In 1960 it was just over 1 million and ~44% of the population of the combined Somalia and Somaliland which was 2.3 million at independence.
The somali region has also had war, famine and loss of population so using it as a benchmark might not be too bad.

Gureey, did you read the study? I eyed through out. If it is actually true, they did more than "estimate on the last census".

Statistically and methodically, the study is accurate. If you ppl think it is cooked, then that is another thing.

Read the method section. It is in line with how one does a demographic study. It wld have been excellent if they put some margins of error (they admit that there are challenges).

The last census in Kenya was not published when it showed that the Somalis in Kenya are in their millions.
