Puntland cannot sign foreign deals: Somalia PM
8 Aug 8, 2007 - 8:47:54 PM

MOGADISHU, Somalia Aug 8 (Garowe Online) - The interim Prime Minister of Somalia, Prof. Ali Mohamed Gedi, has dismissed as irrelevant any agreement the regional government of Puntland signed with foreign companies, inside sources tell Garowe Online.

Puntland President Muse [left] and Somali PM Gedi
A meeting in the capital Mogadishu between Prime Minister Gedi and Gen. Adde Muse, the Puntland leader, ended in discord after officials could not agree to common ground.

Sources at the meeting said the Somali premier refused to validate any agreement the Puntland authority signed with international firms.

At one point, Prime Minister Gedi even suggested that Puntland create a new flag if it wants to have its own government.

The confidential sources said the Puntland-Jabberi deal was discussed and Prime Minister Gedi specifically refused to accept such an agreement.

The Puntland government signed a livestock export deal with Saudi Arabia-based al-Jabberi company in June. That deal has met growing resistance from Puntland businesses, who complain that the al-Jabberi deal gives one foreign company the unfair advantage of exclusive export rights for the next 15 years.

During his stay in the Puntland capital Garowe last month, Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf met with Puntland officials and business leaders. He sanctioned the al-Jabberi deal, which would allow the Saudi company to build an animal care facility in the Puntland port city of Bossaso.

Puntland President Muse came with Yusuf to Mogadishu to to finalize power-sharing agreement with federal government officials led by Prime Minister Gedi.

Observers said Gedi is excercising his authority as prime minister to oppose regional governments from engaging in international deals, a feat he believes is in the exclusive realm of the federal government.

Clearly!

InaBaxar, I couldn't help but correct this girly Binny on the false assumption that people are envious of Puntland. It's amazing to me that he actually believes his wishful thinking to be a fact.

If oil is pumped in Bari Nugaal or Mudug..... these moryaans along with there IRIR cousins hold hope that a bunch of hawiye moryaans will stop it? Last time I checked it was puntland soldiers in Xamar..... and not the other way around. Puntland have signed foreign oil/mineral deals already and will continue to sign foreign deals relating to investment in the region, so long as it benefits our community.

Ina Baxar, you are one of those here that support Somali-Isaaq-land independence and their right with their local administration...so why is it so different the plight of Puntand populace standing with their local government to investing in their local resources, ah? explain that to me cyber-lover-boy?

Jr, Somaliland clearly wants to secede and consider themselves a separate country, they don't want to keep one leg in Somalia and one leg in Somaliland, they want to sever all ties to Somalia. Puntland on the other hand, appears to want to be part of the coveted "Somaliweyn" and yet they do not appear to recognize the very government they allegedly support, since they are accused of making deals with foreign nations without the proper protocol and the "ruling government's" consent.

Jr, you obviously don't see your hypocracy and the flaw in your reasoning. Let me ask you this; how do you expect us Southerners to recognize this transitional fiasco as a ligitimate government when you Northerners (supposedly supporters) don't even recognize them?
