I think it is possible to make the argument that Ethiopia got the Haud and Ogaden BECAUSE Ahmed Gurey's jihad demonstrated Ethiopia needed a buffer zone against just such punitive expeditions. 1977 reinforced that notion. Yet another such expedition is NOT going to strengthen Somalia's negotiating position, even if a Somali force takes and holds Addis.
It is clear to everyone that ethnic Somalis have traditional grazing rights to much of the Adal lowlands, as well as in Djibouti and the NFD. I, and many others who are aware of the situation on the ground, are sympathetic to the concept of Somaliweyn but feel the only way to achieve this is through UN or AU-brokered referendum.
What current interest can any of the outlying Somali populations have in joining a political and economic unit as disfunctional as that which has existed in the South at least since 1991? Militarism is the problem, not the solution.
In terms of the attitudes of those countries which are actually in a position to help Somalis, additional militarism is only going to be additionally counter-productive.

OAU or " AU " is based in Ethiopia and the organization follows sancro sanct borders left by Western Powers , same borders to blame for lots of the problems on our continent today.
I dont understand your logic Grant
1977 and Ahmed Gureys expedition are very different.
but what I know is that it takes iron and blood to build a country
Israel proved it in 1948 .. the palestinians how far have they reached with all these kumbayaa peace efforts ?
how about Polisario ?
Addis must burn

Hadday kaa dhab tahay , waa inaad soo barata waxa "asymmetric warfare " iyo" the principles of an insurgency " ay tahay .. for example gen Petraus baa buug ka soo qoray , local library-gaaga ka soo eeg.
Markaasad kala garan doonta halkey UIC ka socdaan iyo dhibaatada a " conventional army" haysata in these type of conflicts .

Time is what we need against, what the ONLF calls the black colonialists (spot on!). Everything else is counterproductive.
Even assuming that the different Somali entities have united politically to destroy Ethiopia, we could barely even take on the Ethiopian military elements within the borders of the defunct Somali republic, let alone wage war on an African military superpower with disorganized, undisciplined, ragtag militias with poor military leadership and insufficient weaponry and training, suffering from a lack of solid funding and foreign backing.
Somalis overestimate their own capabilities and underestimate their enemies, that's a recipe of disaster. Accept the fact that we're the underdog and in the same predicament as our brothers in kililka shanaad.
To give you an impression of Ethiopia's superiority militarily, I'd like you to see images of a mil-to-mil training at camp hurso (deep in the Ethiopian highlands) between a US military unit from DJ and local ET military elements:

strategy

tactics

morale

obstacle course

scenario training
The captions I've put under each image are there to make clear that Somalis do not stand a chance.
At best, we could take an example from the Eritrean secessionist groups who have used conventional means and guerrilla tactics to defy the Ethiopians for decades!!!! And even then, after Eritrea's victories in Barentu, Afabet etc, the latter demoralized the Ethiopian army, the Eritreans won politically not militarily.
But if my people wish to declare an all out war on Ethiopia, how selfdestructive I may find it, I know of a variety of weapons that we could get our hands on in addition to helpful strategies and tactics, which will help us damage Ethiopia to the maximum. It must be noted that this war will damage Ethiopia terribly, but destroy the little that's left of Somalia in the process.

Not true !!
Again it has to do
more with the
dissimilarity of the enemy than anything else.

excellent post starscream.
focus on tactics and strategy is useless.
the focus should be a revolution that unites and mobilizes the somali masses.
the next focus should be on Ethiopias disintegration.
Ethiopia is an empire and all empires are vulnerable to disintegration.

The focus right now should be on the Ethiopian troops in Somalia and their allies.
Small units of commandos should be dispatched across the nation that harass and attack EThiopian forces & their allies. These units should carry out small operations that harass the supply lines for the Ethiopians.
The best idea is to set up a Muqabarad (intelligence unit) that tracks each Ethiopian lackey/Ethiopian officials in Somalia. Lists of names, ranks and activities should be gathered about each individual with the intention of arresting them or liquidating them either inside Somalia or abroad. Something similar to the Jewish NAzi hunters.

the only answer to ethiopian presense in somalia is a political one.
what prevented them from occupying the south from 95 onwards?
not millitary strenght , but political considerations.
you need some sort of working national government,\
we need to ditch the TFg and replace it with a new TFG that the west will accept and is effective.
This new TFG will have to have islamists in it.
and it has to be formed inside somalias borders, somaliland is a good example

@sahangalbeed
hase yeeshe, I still believe our enemy is lightyears ahead of us, mainly because since the 77 War, they've received roughly a billion US dollars in military assistance from the Soviet Union each year till the end of the 80s. In comparion, Somalia only received a meagre 30-40 million US dollars in military assistance from the US and approximately the same figure from the Soviets before the 77 War.
@gurey
absolutely, focusing on a revolution combined with taking advantage of Ethiopia's shaky foundation could become successful, yet easier said than done.
somaliland would be an excellent venue to hold a large conference, similar to the Arta conference in Djibouti to find a lasting political solution to the south, IF ...
somaliland would allow it in the first place, which they won't. many other problems will arise as well, for instance somaliland's impartiality. even djibouti's impartiality was under fire, what to expect from somaliland, a Somali entity still regarded by most Somalis (including myself) as an integral part of Somalia and therefore having a role within the Somali political theatre.
taking all this into consideration, changing the TFG through elections and lobbying is much more plausible.
