Re: Great Grandparents?
Horta you cannot compare either of them to Shakespeare (no matter how illustrious the person making the comparison was). Shakespeare stands alone in his linguistic and story telling ability (in ANY language).Basra- wrote:PB
"His books always gave a great picture of the English society of his time"
Really? Even though it gave a negative picture of the slums of English society? I guess u would approve this negative narration to suit your somali nationalistic urges.![]()
"Austin’s were too girly (though she wrote beautifully). "
I forgive u for mispelling her name-soley because u said she wrote 'beautifully'.![]()
(Its Austen macaan....
....)
"Those two are pillars of English literature while she’s merely a wet curtain. "
Funny u couple dickens and shakespeare. There is no article or place in the critic reports which even did that--if shakespeare is coupled with anyone it is Jane Austen herself! The famous 18th century poem Scott was the first to compare her!
Your heroine, whilst I happily admit that she was good, is (in my opinion) not in the same class as that of Dickens. I have had the pleasure of reading most of both of their books and could not entertain the thought of comparing the two. She wrote really well (REALLY WELL) but her stories always seemed to be about strong women that have one overriding goal in their lives, to get married!
Dickens on the other hand, wrote about all manner of things in Victorian England. In fact, his vivid descriptions of the places and times sounds much more realistic than Jane Austen’s accounts of balls and mansions. Furthermore, those that read both are more likely to remember the characters from a Dickens novel than those from an Austen one (excluding Elizabeth and Mr Darcy). Historians do not refer to that time as Dickensian for nothing you know.
Still, it is a matter of taste and you are (supposedly) female. Explains it all really.
