I never really understood the 72 virgin thing I always thought of it as being something alqaeda and other groups believed in and not really a part of islam.

Ignorant people keep quoting it without realising it's not even a hadiith. It's not accepted as sahiih or even as daciif, it's rejected as made-up (mutarakkab)
