And what do you mean they have "sophisticated weapons?" Last I checked their most potent arsenal is composed of AK-47s, hand grenades, RPGs and suicide bombings. What sophisticated weapons are you referring to?
Also, they're not farmers so they don't grow their own food neither do they make their own waters they fetch water from same sources as local communities. If they have food, that tells us one thing: they have access to capital to purchase supplies. But who is giving them this capital?
My position is this: Alshabaab gets support from external and internal agents. That means some Somali communities inside Somalis, either out of fear or out of ideological allegiance, provide support to Alshabaab. As fish needs water with which to swim in, these communities are providing cover for Alshabaab to camouflage its activities. Therefore, Somali government and its internal partners should drain the water Alshabaab fish swims in. That means instilling in people GREATER fear than Alshabaab. People should be made to understand that they risk far more reprisal from the government than Alshabaab. After all, providing support to Alshabaab - enemy of the state - is an act of treason which should carry stiff punishment. Anyone found supporting Alshabaab, wittingly or unwittingly, should charged with treason through fair and open trail and then executed. Also, their assets should be seized by the state. If the accused is a farmer, their land should be confiscated and should become state asset.
This!!!
Gedo girl, you said they live isolated from the communities (am not saying this isn't the case), but they wouldn't last long without putting on the local shaati to disguise themselves in the meantime gathering intel info that is crucial for the next qarxis.
